Sherwood Civic Building- Library & City Hall
The Civic Building is located in the City of Sherwood, 15 miles south of Portland. The 30,000 sf building sits on a dynamic site adjacent to a major railroad crossing in the City’s Old Town. The building is a major element in the City’s Urban Renewal Plan, which preserves and enhances the historic downtown district.
The mixed-use building houses a 10,000 sf single-story library and a two story City Hall and library support area. The City Hall includes a large municipal courtroom which accommodates up to 80 people, and also functions as a city council room and a community room. Other program elements include the administrative and financial support spaces for the City Hall and a small retail component. A public plaza is located at the front of the building with the children’s area of the library relating directly to a garden space at the rear. This work was competed while Steve was a lead designer at THA Architecture.
Client Testimonial:
“Steve, and the other members of the Hacker team, came with respect for the project and for the community. They came to listen and to understand and they responded with both art and a beautiful, simple practicality. When you enter the Sherwood Library, your eyes are drawn upward, to the light and air beneath a beautiful ceiling. The ceiling, and the entire structure, were designed with the necessary materials, and nothing more. The firm lived their environmental principles and brought those to the planning, construction, and interiors of the building. I am still grateful for the opportunity I had to meet Steve and work with him.”
